What is and always will be true of it, whatever men do? With verse 6 cf Mt 5:18 2) In these chapters are three visions(1:7-17;1:18-21;2:1-13) How do these answer the following questions? a) What is God's real attitude towards Jerusalem? b) How can the nations which oppress them be subdued? c) Can the city, now desolate, have any future? 3) Consider how much that is said here of Jerusalem is true spiritually for us in Christ. See e.g. 2:5,8n,10-12. Is there not the same call to us to believe, as there was to the people of Zech's day? The measuring line to be stretched out over all Jerusalem wa a symbol of restoration. b)All of God's chosen people's enemies would be defeated in the end, by the Lord's doing. c) The city can still have a future; it says , "The Lord will inherit Judah as His portion in the holy land and will AGAIN choose Jerusalem..."v12 3) Yes, we are his jars of clay. To beused by Him for His purpose. It is true that it is not easy, but we can do all things through Christ's strength. Not our own, though. I like how v5 liken the Lord to a wall of fire around us, with Christ as the glory within. -------------------------------------------- * James Chao -------------------------------------------- Zechariah A Book of the Future in Old Testaments Z. was probably born in babylon, but wrote his book in palestine. Z. was a young prophet, sho stood alongside of the aged Haggai, strengthened the children of Israel as they built the Temple and warned them not to be disappointed of what God, their Father had done. THE TEN VISIONS OF ZECHARIAH Chapter 1 The Horses Among the Myrtle Trees, four horn and Four Craftsmen The first thing this young prophet addressed to his people is "Do not be like your forefathers", 1:4a. It tells us one fact that our fathers and mothers are not always right. Your fathers and their prophets are now long dead, but the Word of God endures! The First Vision - The Rider on the Red Horse 1:7-17 The red horse rider was an angel in human form. He is the Angel of Jehovah. The color red speaks of judgment. Behind this rider on a horse is a company of horsemen. These are angels who, in the role of scouts, report their findings to Christ (the red-horse rider). The myrtle trees in the deep glen (bottom, 1:8) represent Israel, humiliated and suffering. Jerusalem was still under Gentile power. The Jewish people were still scattered but the guilty nations will suffer and Jerusalem shall triumph. The Second Vision - The Four Horns 1:18-19 In this passage, it represents four kindoms. These are ruthless kingdoms which have "unmercifully sifted" God's covenant people. Their power began in "the times of the Gentiles" (Luke 21:24) which started with Judah's captivity under Nebuchadnezzzar (605 B.C.) and will end at the Battle of Armageddon. Salem Kirban Reference Bible suggested that these four horns are: Babylon, Medo- Persia, Greece and Rome. The Third Vision - The Four Craftsmen The craftsmen are the workers in wood, stone, or metal. The purpose of the craftsmen - "These are come to terrify them, to cast out the horns of the nations, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it" 1:21. Cyrus would be one, for he defeated Babylon, Dan 5; Alexanderthe Great would be one, for he defeated Persia, Dan. 8; The various Roman generals would be one, for they subdued Greece; Christ is one, for He will destroy the revived Roman Empire, Rev. 19. [Willmington"s Guide to the Bible] Chapter 2 The Fourth Vision - The Man with a Measuring Line This man came out to measure a city without limits. In 2:4, Z. envisioned a New Jerusalem without wall. In Z's. day, it would be unthinkable for a city without walls. That means this city is without protection. In fact, God Himself would be a wall of fire protection them, 2:5. -------------------------------------------- * Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- Zechariah was a contemporary of Haggai and preached around 520 BC as well. His primary prophecies are Messianic in nature and aside from Isaiah is the OT Prophet with the most information about the then coming Messiah. 1) We learn from the introduction to this chapter that the Word of the Lord has the power to 'overtake' us and to cause repentance. We learn that even though men reject it, it is a constant, even though we deny it, it remains ever true, everlasting. Matt 5:18 tells us that it shall be fulfilled, no matter what we may do. 18 "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 2) Zechariah has 3 visions They reveal God's attitude to Jerusalem and the way the nations that supress Jer. will be subdued. They also show the future of the great city. I) Vision of the Horses and Riders (1:7-17) Even though Israel is oppressed, God still cares and is very concerned for His people. and will restore them to Himself. II) Vision of the 4 Horns and 4 Craftsmen (1:18-21) The horns symbolizing strength of the nations who oppressed Israel were cast away by craftsmen(generals and military leaders) who would rid Israel of their enemies. III) Vision of the Surveyor(2:1-13) This symbolizes the expansion of Jerusalem beyond its walls and its restoration. 3) The truths and promises for Jerusalem are also true for us today. God is our wall of fire, our glory, the one who considers us the apple of His eye, coming to dwell in our midst, and the One who has chosen us. 2 Cor 1:20 20 For as many as are the promises of God, in Him they are yes; therefore also through Him is our Amen to the glory of God through us. ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (Zechariah) CHAPTER 3-4 ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Directing Questions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1) Joshua, as high priest, acts as the representative of the people/ How is the people's guilt to be removed? Also, the Lord rebukes Satan and calls Joshua "a burning stick snatched from the fire". It is a beautiful picture of salvation, mercy and restoration. It is symbolic of Israel, and shows just how the Lord will use people, regardless of their own lack or sin. However, obedience is required, v7..."if you will walk in my ways and keep my requirements, then you will govern..." A conditional offer. 2)ch 4 vision is symbolic of God's telling Israel that they should use His strength, His spirit to rebuild the temple. And His spirit would be in Joshua and Zerubbabel. These two were the anointed ones. -------------------------------------------- * James Chao -------------------------------------------- Zechariah Chapters 3 and 4 Visions of Zechariah - Continued Chapter 3 The Fifth Vision - Our Rock of Salvation and The Branch This is the greatest single chapter on the subject of salvation in all the Old Testament. In this vision Z. saw Joshua, the high priest, dressed in filthy clothing, and standing before God. Satan accused Joshua because of his earthly clothing. Christ removed the dirty contaminated earthly clothing and dressed him in His righteousness. WATCH OUT!! Satan is there and has access to God. He makes accusations against you and I whenever, whatever and wherever he can. My servant the Branch, Z. 3:8, corresponds to Luke's gospel, which presents Christ Himself as the perfect Man. The Cornerstone, 3:9 - To Israel, Jesus is the stumbling Stone and to Gentiles He is the Cornerstone and the Rock of Salvation. Chapter 4 The Golden Lampstand and The Two Olive Trees There are seven pure gold lampstands. Each one has seven channels; they receive the same oil source. These lampstands are the witnesses of God in this world. It refers to Israel in Old Testament time and church in New Testament time, Rev. 1-3. The oil is the supply of these lights. Today, the Holy Spirit and the Word of God are the sources of these lights - Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit mighty mountain can be moved, Z.4:6 and 7. I pray - Give me Your power that mountains in front of me may be moved so that there would be nothing between me and my Lord. (By the way, my Chinese name PaShan means lift up the mountain) The olive trees indicate two men. Refer to Wilmington Guide to The Bible, they are Zerubbabel and Joshua in historical team; Elijah and Moses in prophetical terms. -------------------------------------------- * Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) Zech's next vision is the Vision of Joshua the High Priest. This vision shows Joshua, the religious leader of the people. The people's guilt is removed by the return of Christ. Also of significance is the cleansing of Joshua, who at the time was thought by some to be unfit (Ryrie Study Bible) as a leader. The Branch(indicating Christ's humanity since he referred to us as the branches in John) will come to save us. 2) The next vision is of the Golden Lampstand. This vision is a vision of the civil leadership Zerubbabel. Both he and Joshua were witnesses (olive trees - symbolizing anointing or Holy Spirit infilling) The relevenace Josh and Zerub. were witnesses to the Temple completion just as at the return of Chirst Moses and Elijah will be witnesses that sound forth the glory of God. This vision symbolizes that things happen, v6 'Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit' 2 Cor 10:4,5 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, The power of the Holy Spirit is the working force here and can move every mountain(obstacle) in the way. May we too appropriate and use the Holy Spirit's power in our own lives to move the seemingly insurrmountable mountainous tasks we need to accomplish. We appropriate this power against the weapons of spiritual warfare through our obedience to Christ. ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (Zechariah) CHAPTER 5-6 ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Directing Questions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1) Chapter 5 contains a vivid vision concerning those who practice wickedness, and of wickedness itself. Although only two of the original commandments are mentioned here, that of swearing, the third, Ex. 20:7 (crimes against God), and stealing, the eighth, Ex. 20:15 (all crimes against man). They nevertheless covered the entire moral code of God. The flying scroll represents the removal of transgressors. The Eighth Vision - The Woman in the Ephah, 5:5-11 The prophet viewed a flying bushel basket covered by a heavy lead and a woman seated inside. The vision sets forth the final removal of iniquity itself. [Salem Kirban Reference Bible] The bushel (ephah) is a dry measure. The ephah represents trade of commerce. Z. saw this ephah as a symbol of the evil system. The woman in the ephah represents ecclesiastical Babylon, religious wickedness. The woman sits contently among the satanically controlled business and government operations. She courts world leaders and they in turn, the heavy lead cover, keep her controlled. In Z. 5:9 two women, demonic forces, shelter the woman, transport her back to Babylon. Then God 's judgment falls on ecclesiastical and commercial Babylon. Chapter 6:1-8 The Ninth Vision - The Four Chariots The two brass mountains speak of God's judgment. The various colored horses are related to Revelation 6: The red - War and bloodshed; The black - famine and starvation; The white - false peace; The gray - death. Chapter 6:9-15 The Tenth Vision - The Crowning of Joshua Z. was told that three Jewish exiles will soon return to Jerusalem form Babylon, carrying gifts of silver and gold from the remnant there. Z. was instructed to make a golden crown from these gifts and place it upon Joshua, explaining to him that he represented the future Branch of Israel, the Messiah. -------------------------------------------- * Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) The vision of the scroll(5:1-4) This vision shows a scroll representing judgement going out against thos who practice wicked ways. The priest king on the throne is manifested in Christ.Verse 15 refers to the Gentiles role in the building of the temple 'those who are far off'(Haggai 2:7) Eph 2:13 again reinterates this. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 ¶ For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, 15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace, 16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity. What attitude of heart towards God had the Jews shown? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments from (Zechariah) Chapter 7 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------------------------------- * Blenda Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) The Lord did not approve because the fasting was more ritualistic than sincere. Also, when they rejoiced, it was for themselves and not in the Lord. We do so often forget the Lord, to our own loss, in the midst of problems and rejoicing. However, He is compassionate to us still. May His love draw us more and more to Him, till we walk each day, moment by faith. 2) We all have a sinful nature. Here, Z. rebuked the Jews for not showing compassion and even oppressing the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. They were stubbornly unwilling to listen, they "..turned their backs and stopped up their ears..hearts as hard as flint.."v11-12. We also do this by ignoring the poor, needy, etc., Not that we can or even should do every charity service we see, but there must be some special services that we are perfect for where we can minister to the needy. -------------------------------------------- * James Chao -------------------------------------------- Zechariah Chapter 7 How to Be A Christian Execute true justice, Show mercy and compassion Everyone to his brother. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, The alien or the poor. Let none of you plan evil in his heart Against his brother. 7:9 This is a practical chapter of Christian life. The background of this chapter is that when Israelites were exiled to Babylon, they had imposed two fasts on themselves. One occurred in the fifth month to commemorate the destruction of the temple, 2 Kin. 25:8-9. The other occurred in the seventh month to commemorate the assassination of Gedaliah, the appointed governor of Judah after the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem, Jer.41:1-3. The Lord challenged them do not follow the forms of religious services - The empty rituals services open to self-deception and hypocrisy. The message is that we need to match our lifestyle with the integrity of a Christlike character, not by performing fasting or feasting. Traditions may have its historical meaningfulness, but may not have any personal significance. It would erode its value. The consequences are very clearly addressed,7:13-14 "When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen, says the Lord Almighty. I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations, where they were strangers. The land was left so desolate behind them that no one could come or go. This is how they made the pleasant land desolate." -------------------------------------------- * Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) With what did God find fault in these fasts? See vs 5,6 and contrast 1Cor 10:31. In the light of this part of the prophet's reply, is there not much in men's worship today that is not acceptable to God? 1) God found fault with the fasts of the people because they were fasting to serve themselves(v6). God commands us to do all to His glory, not our own in 1 Cor 10:31: 31 Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. We must always as the Church(universal) be watchful that we DO NOT do things to glorify ourselves individually or corporately(as a denomination, a church(physical, or in part[i.e. a single church]) Instead we must strive to honor God in all that we say and do. 2) Enmity among brothers comes from within the heart. The Jews had made their hearts 'like flint'(a very hard stone, so hard it sparks to create fire when struck upon). Let our hearts not be as flint, but let us warm our hearts to be like clay, able to be shaped by God as the potter. ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (Zechariah) CHAPTER 8 ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> 1) Enumerate the blessings which God here promises concerning Jerusalem, noticing also the emphasis placed upon them by the number of times the phrase 'says the Lord' occurs. Is God less willing to fulfill to us the 'precious and very great promises' (2 Pet1:4), which He has given us in Christ?cf Heb 6:11-18. 2) WHat, however, are the conditions for obtaining the promises of God? In the light of the evidence we have of God's willingness to give, where does the hindrance lie, if we are not enjoying in personal experience the things promised? 3) What will ultimately happen to the fasts about which the deputation from Bethel had enquired in 7:2,3? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Directing Questions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments from (Zechariah) Chapter 1 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------------------------------- * Blenda Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) 14 times, it says "The Lord Almighty says". It seems that if we are not enjoying God's promises, it is due to sin or spiritual blindness. 3) The fasts would turn into "joyful and glad occasions and happy festivals for Judah." -------------------------------------------- * James Chao -------------------------------------------- Zechariah 8 Turn Your Fasts to be Feasts Last chapter, God said to His people that it does not make much difference what they do, for their hearts are insincere. He admonishes them to be honest in their dealings with both their God and their neighbors. Here, in this chapter, He promises that because of His grace their fast days will someday be feast days. Their sorrow be turned into singing. The Lord promised them, 8:12: The seed will grow well, The vine will yield its fruit, The ground will produce its crops, and The heavens will drop their dew. The Conditions for These Blessings, 8:16: Speak the truth to each other, and Render true and sound judgment in your courts. Do not plot evil against your neighbor, and Do not love to swear falsely, I HATE ALL THIS. LET YOUR hands BE STRONG SO THAT THE TEMPLE MAY BE BUILT. 8:9b After long delay of 14 years due to various events of discouragement, God provided some strong HANDS to restart and complete the temple. -------------------------------------------- * Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) God promises the following to Jerusalem: Promise Implication -------------------------------------------------------------------- - He will return Presence of God - Old men and women will sit in the streets Safety / long life - streets filled with boys and girls playing safety and blessing of future generations - Hard things will not be advised Compassion - protection from east and western borders Salvation/protection - Remanant returns Communion with God - Yield of the land Provision - blessing among nations God's providence - feasts instead of fasts Provision There are 10 places where the phrase 'Thus says the Lord of Hosts' occurs. verses 2,3,4,6,7,9,14,19,20,23. The fact that God honors these promises show us in fact that all His promises are truthful. From the early covenant of the Rainbow with Noah to the covenant with Abraham, to the individual promises of Messiah to the Children of Israel. He never breaks His word. How beautiful... 2) In order to experience the promises of God, we must be living lives that are pleasing to God. We must v16-19: 'speak the truth to one another, judge in truth, and have love in our hearts'. 3) God said that he would turn their fastings into feastings. However, the Lord says, "I will defend my house...for now I am keeping watch"v8. 2) a) His character is righteous, having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey. b,c,d) Gentle, riding on a donkey but to do great things: proclaim peace to the nations, rule from sea to sea. Prisoners will be freed, restoration granted. Judah and Israel will be the Lord's bow and arrow. 3) v13 A warrior's sword like the sword of the Spirit we have by salvation v16 salvation on that day: eternal life salvation -also sparkle like jewels in a crown: let our lights shine before men, shine like stars in the universe (Philip 2:15) 10:1 gives showers of rain to men: has sent us the Holy Spirit v6 strengthen and save, restore and answer: we are to cast all our burdens on Him, to repent and confess our sins and He will forgive them, to have all kinds of prayers and petitions (Eph 6:10-11a: "Finally, be strong in the Lord an in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God..." Phillip1:28: "..without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved-and that by God.") -------------------------------------------- * James Chao -------------------------------------------- Zechariah 9 The New Promised Land; The Messiah; The Restoration of Israel In the first eight chapters, Z. showed us the visions and messages to Israelites concerning their hypocrisy and disobedience. -> From Chapter 9 and on, Z. expressed his two burdens: The First Burden - The Rejection of the Messiah Judgmenton surrounding nations, 9:1-8; Comingof the Messiah, 9:9-10:12; Rejectionof the Messiah, 11:1-17 The Second burden - The Reign of the Messiah Deliveranceof Israel, 12:1-13:9; Reignof the Messiah, 14:1-21. The new promised Land 9:1-8 9:8 - "--- I will defend my house against marauding forces. Never again will an oppressor overrun my people, for now I am keeping watch." Why? Because 9:1b "---- for the eyes of men and all the tribes of Israel are on the Lord." In verse 3 and 4, Tyre built a stronghold to protect herself for her gold and silver. It is the Lord who would consume her by fire and remove her possessions. How many times are these lessons repeated to us in the Bible? In verse 5 - 6, the prophet mentioned four of the principal cities/states of Philistines. The Philistines were punished because that they had no right to treat God's people without respect to God. Then, in verse 9 to 10, the prophet foretells the Messiah would come on a donkey. His empire shall stretch from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth. Israel would be restored, 9:11-17 - The Lord will pasture his people. His land will shine like flashing jewels of a crown. Corn and sweet wine will make the young men and maidens flourish. Chapter 10 Deliverance and Return Due to Their Faithfulness Ask for rain at the time of the spring rain, 10:1. It implies that we should trust our Lord is in control of everything. "Even the winds and the waves obey Him!", Matthew 827b. With that kind of faith the Lord promised them, "I will strengthen the house of Judah and save the house of Joseph. I will restore them because I have compassion on them. They will be as though I had not rejected them, for I am the Lord their God and I will answer them.", 10:6. Finally, in the name of the Lord, they will make each move and each step, 10:12. -------------------------------------------- * Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) Zechariah's eye is directed toward the Lord, even in the midst of all that he sees happening. God's power is able to overcome the best that the world has to offer. No amount of silver or gold can purchase enough resources to foil God's plans and His will. No tower or fortress is so strong that God cannot tear it down or bring it crashing to the sea. 2) This picture of Jesus Christ(King of Zion) show us His character. He is just, endowed with salvation, humble, and peaceful. He will come riding a donkey. The final extent of His rule will be from sea to sea. 3) Here is a list of the promises from (9:13-10:12) - use Judah as his bow nad fill it with arrows of Ephraim.v13 - defending of Zion v15 - salvation v16 - 10:1 showers of blessing - suppress the wicked as the cornerstone, tent peg, etc... 10:4 - 8: increase the number - 10 dispersion, but reclamation - 12 strengthen them to walk in the name of the Lord. Let us each one strive to be filled with Jesus that we may be strengthened by His Spirit and walk in his name, for at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord! ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (Zechariah) CHAPTER 11 ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Directing Questions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1) Verse 7 The good shepherd's 'two staffs' (rod and staff in Ps23:4) were named Grace and Union, indicating that He came in grace to bing the flock into one. How far is this a picture of Christ? Cf Jn 1:14;17:20-22. 2) How is the lot of those who deliberately refuse the god described? Cf Mt 23:37,38;2Thes 2:8 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments from (Zechariah) Chapter 11 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------------------------------- * Blenda Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) Christ is our atonement. He bridges the gap where our sinfulness separates us from God. By grace we are saved, and have peace with God. What a mighty gift we have been given in Jesus Christ. God is love, and so He sent Jesus Christ, that we might receive salvation and have eternal life. Praise His Wonderful Name - we HAVE BEEN SAVED FROM DEATH AND BROUGHT INTO LIFE EVERLASTING! 2) The Shepherd tired of the flock who detested him and refused to be a shepherd any longer, letting the dying die. Ungrateful, unresponsive hearts will reap the fruit they deserve. Yet God even continued to have compassion on them. How great is the love the Father has for us...(I Jn 3:1) -------------------------------------------- * James Chao -------------------------------------------- Zechariah Chapter 11 Prophecy of Shepherds Destruction of the Land and Her Leaders, 11:1-3 The first three verses in this chapter envision the ruin of Lebanon, Bashan and their evil shepherds (leaders). The prophet anticipated the cedar and cypress forests of Lebanon and oaks of Bashan would be destroyed by overcutting and poor management. They lost their magnificent woodland because of the Cedar Trade, 1 Kings 7:2. Meanwhile, the leaders of Israel were wailing - for their wealth was gone. The Shepherd and the False Shepherds The shepherd came to feed the flock, particularly the oppressed ones, 11:7; The false shepherds rejected Him, 11:8; These false shepherds are also referred as foolish shepherd, 11:15, and worthless shepherd, 11:17; The Shepherd was sold for thirty pieces of silver, 11:12; Because they rejected their Shepherd at his first coming, Israel will be given over for awhile to the cruel Antichrist shepherd, 11:15-17. "Woe to the worthless shepherd, Who leaves the flock! A sword shall be against his arm And against his right eye; His arm shall completely wither, And his right eye shall be totally blinded." -------------------------------------------- * Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) In this chapter, God has Zechariah act the part of the good shepherd, an example of the true Good Shepherd Christ. He came in Grace and in union. Christ came in grace Jn 1:14 and to bring union 17:20-22 The rod and staff were to comfort(ps 23:4). The Rod was used to protect the sheep from evil, and the staff was used to lead the sheep into the pasture land. 2) Those who refuse our Gracious Lord will be the victims of the wrath of God and judgement. Only death and destruction await those who reject the good shepherd. ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (Zechariah) CHAPTER 12-13 ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Directing Questions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1) What is to be the secret of Jerusalem's survival when threatened by so many enemies gathered together against it(12:1-9;cf 14:3)? Has the Christian similar hope of overcoming the world, the flesh, and the devil?Cf Ps 27:1-5;IJn 4:4;5:4 2) What four experiences of God's people are set forth in 12:10-13:9? Do you know them in your experience? a) with 12:10-14 cf Jn 16:8,9; Acts 2:37-40. b) With 13:1 cf Heb 9:13,14.c) With 13:2-5 Cf 2 Cor 7:1 d) With 13:7-9 cf I Pet 1:5-7. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments from (Zechariah) Chapter 12-13 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------------------------------- * Blenda Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) The Lord was Jerusalem's protection - "..I will make j. an immovable rock for all the nations...The people of Jerusalem are strong, BECAUSE THE LORD ALMIGHTY IS THEIR GOD." Truly, I wish we could learn the reality of what it is to be an overcomer of the world. I desire this greatly in my own life. 2) 1-pouring out of a spirit of grace and supplication 2- a fountain opened to house of David to cleanse them from sin and impurity, 3- banish the idols and false prophets, spirit of impurity, 4- a selective remnant will be saved (1/3) to be refined and called God's people. -------------------------------------------- * James Chao -------------------------------------------- Zechariah 12 An Oracle - Deliverance of Israel There is an essential element in this oracle which is emphasized along the course of this event. That is the SPIRIT, 12:1; 12:10. On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against Israel, the Lord will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. Whosoever tries to move (the rock, Jerusalem) it will injure themselves.12:3. On that day, I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem. 12:9. Why, because the Spirit of God will pour out onto them. 12:10. "Then the leaders of Judah will say in their hearts, 'The people of Jerusalem are strong, because the Lord Almighty is their God.' 12:5 Why will the Spirit of God pour out onto them? Because of their confession that Jesus is Christ - "They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for the firstborn son." 12:10. Chapter 13 The Cleansed One-third To be filled with the Spirit one must be cleansed first by a fountain, 13:1. The wicked two-third will be struck down and perish, 13:8. The remaining one-third will be refined, 13:9: "This third I will bring into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, 'They are my people,' And they will say, 'The Lord is our God.' -------------------------------------------- * Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) In this chapter Jerusalem is surrounded by many enemies. But, the Lord will deliver them. He promises to: - make them a v3 a heavy stone Immovable, solid. - make them v6 a firepot among pieces of wood Consuming fire and a flaming torch among sheaves - defend them v8 - destroy nations that come against them v9 We too have this hope that God will deliver us from the world and our enemies. Psalm 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread? And also, let us not forget that He that is in us is greater than he that is in the world. I Jn 4:4 4 ¶ You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 2) We see four experiences of God's people I - repentance/mourning/confession II - cleansing from sin III - justification through judgement / refinement IV - communion / sealing of God's people Each of these is required of Christians as well. We must experience true repentance and confess our sins, then we may be cleased by the fountain filled with blood. After this we may pass through the judgement of fire with the covering of the gracious blood and be refined into pure vessels sealed for His Holy purposes. I Pet 1:6-7 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ Let us be glad and exalt Him on High who has revealed to us the revelation of Hope and provided the cleansing covering of Grace that we might pass through the Refining fire of Judgement unscathed to produce a precious vessel reflecting His Glory. ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (Zechariah) CHAPTER 14 ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Directing Questions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1) Verses 1-5 describe the breaking in of the day of the Lord. Who will at that time be gathered against Jerusalem? What will happen to the city and its inhabitants? When and in what manner will the Lord appear? 2) In the day of the Lord what further results will come to pass as regards a) Jerusalem v6-11;cf Rev 22:1-5,Jn 4:13,14 b) those who attacked Jerusalem (v12- 15) and c) the remnant of the nations that have escaped v16-19. 3) Picture the city as described in verses 20,21. Are you aiming to see that your life is holy in every part? Cf 2Cor7:1;IThes 3:13, I Pet 1:15,16 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments from (Zechariah) Chapter 14 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------------------------------- * Blenda Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) All the nations will fight against Jerusalem , and half will be exiled, but the rest remain. Then the Lord will fight and split the Mount of Olives in two, forming a valley. This is all on the day of battle. The Lord will come with all His holy ones. 2) No light, cold or frost; No daytime or nighttime, living water will flow half to the east, half to the west, The Lord will be king over the whole earth, the land will become leveled, except for Jerusalem which will be raised, inhabited and secure, never to be destroyed again. The nations that fought J. will have a terrible fate - flesh rot while standing on their feet, eyes rot, tongues rot, stricken with panic, attack each other, even the animals will be plagued. The remanant will go to J. to worship the Lord each year and will have drought in their land if they fail to, plague if they don't go to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. 3) Holy throughout. I desire holiness, but it is truly something that must be worked for through obedience to His commands and prayer, I believe. Too often, sin creeps in and sways us from our desire to be like Him. May He crush that evil sway and cause us to be pure in mind, action and speech. -------------------------------------------- * James Chao -------------------------------------------- Zechariah 14 On That Day Living Water Will Flow Out From Jerusalem, 14:8a In this book, Z. the first eight chapters mentioned the chosen people and the Temple. Then, the rest of the chapters envisioned the Messiah and the Kingdom. Z. foretells the Saviour's first and the second coming. Sometimes I wonder how the Jewish rabbis interpret the Bible such as Zec. 9:9 about His triumphal entry into Jerusalem and that He was sold for thirty pieces of silver, 11:12 and some other prophecies in Isaiah and Psalm etc. concerning the life of Jesus. Z. told us that at His second coming, He would gather all the nations to fight against Jerusalem, 14:1, and the city will be captured etc. Then, the Lord will go out and fight against those nations, 14:3. Finally, the Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and His name the only name, 14:9 Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES. 14:16 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, 14:8a. The closing statement of this book was made in such a wonderful way which is parallel to the statement the Lord Jesus made in John chapter 7 on the day of feast of Tabernacles: "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Streams of living water will flow from within him" John 7:37b-38 In the scene of John chapter 6, there was the feast of Passover. In the scene of John chapter 7, there is the feast of Tabernacles. The feast of Passover is the first of the Jewish annual feasts, and the feast of Tabernacles is the last, Lev. 23. The feast of Passover implies the beginning of man's salvation. To make it brief, John 6:35 Jesus declared "I am the bread of life.---." The Lord God sustains our spiritual lives. God ordained the feast of Tabernacles so that the children of Israel would remember how their forefathers, while wandering in the wilderness, lived in tents walking through the desert for the destination of the promised land to reach the living water to quench their thirst. The message delivered here by Zechariah is that we should be content living a tent life on this earth and looking forward to the eternal tabernacle where a river of water of life, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb, Rev. 22:1, 17 The water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. John 4:14 Amen -------------------------------------------- * Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) This last chapter goes into many prophecies concerning the Lord's Second Coming. The battle of Armageddon is described in 1-5. All the nations will be against Jerusalem. The inhabitants will have half of them exile. The Lord will appear ready for battle and strengthen the people for battle. He will bring his holy ones with Him. 2) Further account of the day of the Lord is given in 6-11. Here we learn that there will be no light(sun darkened, moon made dim). We also learn that living waters will flow from Jerusalem on that day. Those who attacked Jerusalem will be struck with a plague. Their flesh will rot, and they will deteriorate physically - what an awful picture is painted in v12. They will turn on one another and kill each other. Animals will also be infected by this plague. The remnant of the nations having escaped will worship and celebrate the Feast of Booths. The Feast of Booths is described in Lev 23:33-43. It is a remembrance of the time spent in the wilderness. It is a remembering of God's leading in the lives of the Israelites. For 7 days in the 7th month they will live in 'booths'(tents). Those not observing the Feast of Booths will experience drought(probably spiritual and physical) and Egypt will experience plagues. 3) The Millenial Jerusalemn is quite a description. Even the bells of the horses will be set apart, holy, sanctified for the Lord. Are all of our possesions and things such inscribed("HOLY TO THE LORD"). Is our TV, is our computer, is our car being sanctified and set apart as HOLY? I Pet 1:15,16 15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY." May each of us strive to make the things in our life Holy so that we too may taste the streams of living water and be refreshed and quenched daily.
