He always chose the strategic centers from which to work. Iconum was a prosperous commercial city on one of the main trade routes from east to west, where there would be both Jews and Gentiles. Lystra was a smaller and more country town, with a simpler and less-educated population. 1)Each verse of verses 1-7 describes a fresh development in the events at Iconium. From these identify the three main stages of the work. Are you finding that opposition (human or satanic) follows blessing in your Christian work? 2)Verses 8-12. At Lystra a cripple is healed. What are (a) the condition of the man, (b) the cause and the character of his faith, and (c) the reaction of the people? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments from (ACTS) Chapter 14:1-12 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------------------------------- Blenda Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) To me, the 3 main stages are 1) Both Jews and Gentiles believed 2)Jews poisoned the minds of Gentiles against P&B 3)There was division, some believeing the apostles, others siding with the Jews- resulting in Jews plotting against P&B, but they escaped safely. I notice that Satan likes to get to us through our feelings all the time. Sometimes right after a really good service or spiritual sensitivity or sharing what we believe, Satan will try to throw a bad feeling at us. We have to be strong andrecognize that certain feelings are certainly not from or of the Lord; pray in the Spirit on all occassions. 2) a) The man had FAITH TO BE HEALED, which is the essential element, despite being lame from birth and crippled in both feet. That is why Paul could heal him so easily. b) The man had faith after listening to Paul speak; the character of his faith was a blind, childlike faith which is what it takes to approach God. c) the people were astonished and considered P&B to be gods (Greek gods). They did not bother to consider where the real power came from; they were so eager to worship tangible beings, but probably lacked the faith of the cripple. -------------------------------------------- Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) The work at Iconium (seems to be a pattern throughout Acts) was staged as follows: a) Great proclamation of the gospel to Jews(at the synagogue) b) controversy and opposition by the Jewish leaders c) great numbers of believers receive the message after the message is then brought to Gentiles and Jews. Where the Lord is trying to work, there is the point at which Satan is most likely to intervene. Satan despises the work of the Lord being carried out and tries to stop it, we must as P&B did press on and fight harder when faced with this opposition. Let us prepare ourselves with a plan of attack, and be properly armed for this confrontation with Satan. 2) The lame man's condition is the same as the cripple man Peter and John heal in Acts 3:2, cripple from birth, NEVER having walked. He was OPEN to receive and had the complete FAITH to believe he would be healed. The reaction of the crowd was that of complete amazement. May we too be open to being the recipient of a miracle as was the cripple man. May we each day be OPEN to whatever God is working in our lives and have faith that He will work it out for His good. -------------------------------------------- Les Tripp -------------------------------------------- Chapter 14:1-13 1. "as usual" indicates that Paul and Barnabas had a general working strategy for spreading the gospel. Their effectiveness indicates that it was a God-provided strategy. We must seek a God-given working for sharing the gospel and then employ it. A strategy for one may not be the same as for another. The strategy for one individual may not be the same for a team. 2. ALWAYS expect opposition. The Gospel is ALWAYS contrary to the hearts and minds of men. Only those haearts and minds that have been prepared by the HS are receptive. The message of the Gospel is divisive (v4). 3: P&B were motivated and energized by the opposition. Their's was a ministry/message that was empowered and confirmed by God. 4: see note for V2. 5: The message of the Gospel is so divisive as to energize the opposition. 6: God's timing: God was not ready to end the ministry of P&B, but He did end the ministry of Stephen (Acts &:54-60). 8/9: Not just crippled - but crippled from birth, a congenital defect. We suffer from a congenital defect - sin. God is able to heal us if we come to him in faith. We must listen to the message. If we cover our ears (Acts 7:57), we will miss God's healing power. 10: When we are saved we are called on to act (demonstrate faith as in confessing with our mouth--Rom 10:9-11). 11: When P&B ministered in the power of the HS the people saw the power of God. When we minister on the basis of our own wisdom, power and knowledge people see us not God or Jesus. The people saw something unusual and this permitted P&B to preach the Gospel. -------------------------------------------- James Chao -------------------------------------------- (a) Great Testimony in Iconium: When P&B went to this commercialized city, they went to synagogue speaking boldly in the Lord, WHO WAS BEARING WITNESS TO THE WORD OF hIS GRACE ---, 14:3. Jn. 1:17 - fOR THE LAW WAS GIVEN THROUGH MOSES, BUT GRACE AND TRUTH CAME THROUGH jESUS cHRIST. I Cor. 15:10 - bUT BY THE GRACE OF gOD I AM WHAT I AM, AND hIS GRACE TOWARD ME WAS NOT IN VAIN; BUT I LABORED MORE ABUNDANTLY THAN THEY ALL, YET NOT I, BUT THE GRACE OF gOD WHICH WAS WITH ME.. Paul is talking about the grace of the resurrected Christ. This power of resurrection caused a great multitude, both Jews and Gentiles, to believe in Christ. (b) A cripple's faith was honored Acts 14:8-12: A helpless cripple who had never walked. Paul observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed. Paul shouted out to him to stand up and he gained strength to walk. It is interesting to compare this miracle with the one given in Acts 3. In 3:6, Peter cried that IN THE NAME OFjJESUS cHRIST OF NAZARETH, RISE UP AND WALK. Prayer: May the Lord charges us with a spiritual shout and makes us walk in Spirit to testify that Jesus is Christ through our daily life with our E-Study. -------------------------------------------- RJ Carr -------------------------------------------- There does seem to be a common thread to missionary/disciple work. God allows the missionaries to preach the word and perform miracles. Those who believe take God's word to heart and spread the Gospel to others. However, in most cases there is always a faction that rises up against the word of God. God directs the missionaries out of dangerous areas before their enemies can reach them. In Lystra, the cripple heard the Gospel and took it to heart. By demonstrating faith, the cripple was open to a miracle and received God's blessing. Those who did not take God's word to heart, perceived the miracle to be from false Gods. ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (ACTS) CHAPTER 14:13-28 ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Directing Questions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1)What five elemental truths about God are set forth by Paul in verses 15-17? What application does he draw from them? Cf verses 11,14,15. To whom do you think Paul would bring this kind of message today? 2)Verses 19-25. Despite opposition Paul and Barnabas return to the cities where churches have been founded to strengthen them. In what ways did they encourage these young Christians? What may we learn from this about helping one another in our faith? 3)Paul and Barnabas report to the church that had sent them out. Cf 13: 1-3 with 14:26-28. What is their emphasis in the way they report? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments from (ACTS) Chapter 14:13-28 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------------------------------- Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) Paul reveals the followign to the crowd - God is: a) living b) creator of all, c) Sovreign(in control), d) Righteous and e)is merciful, gracious and kind. Paul wants to relay to the crowd that none of us is God or godlike. He would bring this message to the humanists of today, the new agers who believe they are god like and are all-powerful to show them that there is ONLY ONE true and living God. 2) P&B let the Christians know that "We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God" We must continue to encourage one another to press on toward the mark, and remembering that our reward is in heaven, a crown uncorruptable and undefiled. Let us pray that we remain steadfast throughout the hardships we must face. 3) P&B return to Antioch to report to ALL the church ALL that HE (God) had done through them. May we always remember that it is not us, but HE that is in us is who is greater than he who is in this world. Let us not rest alone in the victory He has won but march forward to claim the high ground. -------------------------------------------- James Chao -------------------------------------------- (a) Being stoned and rose up: 14:19b-20 --- THEY STONED PAUL AND DRAGGED HIM OUT OF THE CITY, SUPPOSING HIM TO BE DEAD. hOWEVER, WHEN THE DISCIPLES GATHERED AROUND HIM, HE ROSE UP AND WENT INTO THE CITY. --- Would I pay such a price to be a witness of Jesus Christ? Lord help me to be faithful. It was a miracle to me that Paul rose up after being stoned. After he rose up, Paul went back to the City again. All that was done in those situations is beyond my comprephension. Godly men walk in godly ways. (b) To continue in the faith: When they were first believing in Jesus Christ, they were instructed to continue in the grace of God, 13:43. Now they were told to continue in the faith. It is addressed in Colossians 1:23 that IF INDEED YOU CONTINUE IN THE FAITH, GROUNDED AND STEADFAST, AND ARE NOT MOVED AWAY FROM THE HOPE OF THE GOSPEL WHICH YOU HEARD, WHICH WAS PREACHED TO EVERY CREATURE UNDER HEAVEN, OF WHICH i pAUL, BECAME A MINISTER, Then you would IN THE BODY OF hIS FLESH THROUGH DEATH, TO PRESENT YOU HOLY, AND BLAMELESS, AND IRREPROACHABLE IN hIS SIGHT, cOL. 1:22. (C) Elders were Appointed and there are CROWN OF GLORY reserved for them: In these young chruches at that time, the elders were appointed, 14:23. Those elders were chosen based on, I Peter 5:1-4, --- sHEPHERD THE FLOCK OF gOD WHICH IS AMONG YOU, SERVING AS OVERSEERS, NOT BY CONSTRAINT BUT WILLINGLY, NOT FOR DISHONEST GAIN BUT EAGERLY; --- . (D) WE MUST THROUGH MANY TRIBULATIONS ENTER THE KINGDOM OF gOD, 14:22: In II Tim. 3 12 it says that yES, AND ALL WHO DESIRE TO LIVE GODLY IN cHRIST jESUS WILL SUFFER PERSECUTION. Lord! Give me strength to live a Godly life. Yet, let me live a peaceful life, if possible. Amen. -------------------------------------------- Les Tripp -------------------------------------------- 15: The Gospel misunderstood. 17: The message stated in ways with which the people could identify rain, crops, food - provisions not entirely of their own doing. 18: The Gospel, no matter how clearly presented, may be misunderstood. 20: There is a point at which disciples must move on to more fertile fields. It is important to be led by the Spirit in whether to press on or change direction. 21: P&B certainly were led by the Spirit. Again, God confirmed their decision and ministry. 22: P&B strengthening the disciples through their testimony! 23: The appointing of elders reflects the establishment of leadership and structure in the churches. Not just an election or casting of lots. Selection done with prayer and fasting. 27: The missionary report -- an essential part of missionary work. As partners in the missionary effort, we need to be encouraged by what God is doing around the world. It strengthens our efforts in the partnership. In addition, we must report to our fellow believers what God is doing in and through us. A report to our brothers and sisters in the Lord who uphold us in their prayers. 28: The passage does not say why P&B stayed a long time. Was it a time of being encouraged and restored by brothers, a time for encouraging the brothers, a time for study and reflection, or all of the above? Does God expect us to stop for restoration, reflection, encouragement and encouraging others? -------------------------------------------- RJ Carr -------------------------------------------- Five Elemental truths about God 1) Living God versus an idol. 2) God left a testimony here on earth to save us all from sin. 3) God is the great provider. 4) God made heaven, earth, sea and everything else 5) God fills your heart with great joy! This message is applicable to all who are searching for truth in their lives and have been discouraged by the promises of the world. Paul and Barnabas communicated to all who would listen. As they reported back to the churches, they clearly gave glory to God for working through them to reach others. In addition, P&B encouraged others to remain consistent in their faith through the trials in life. It is of the utmost importance that we establish relationships with other believers. This support will equip us with the courage and determination to continue our quest to be more Christ centered. ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (ACTS) CHAPTER 15: 1-12 ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Directing Questions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1)The point at issue between the newly-established Gentile church at Antioch and the older Jewish church at Jerusalem was: 'On what terms can Gentiles be saved?' What answer was given by (a) Paul and Barnabas (see 14: 27), and (b) the teachers from Judaism (verses 1,5)? Write down what you think is essential for salvation. 2)Verses 7-11. Of what three facts did Peter remind the Council at Jerusalem, and what conclusions does he draw from them? Is it possible for old established churches to impose upon young churches of a different culture, or for mature Christians to impose upon new converts, patterns of behaviour or ceremonies that are not essential to Christianity? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments from (ACTS) Chapter 15: 1-12 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------------------------------- Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- Salvation for all: Paul and Barnabas opened the door for the Gentiles to be saved without the law and circumcision. The Jewish teachers felt that only by circumcision and obedience to the law would the Gentiles truly be saved. The key to salvation is the acceptance of Jesus Christ as Saviour. Peter reminds us that God is Sovreign, He knows the heart, and He purifies hearts. We should not test God, but realize that v11 "it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved". This question is similar to the question of worship form in the modern church. Should we use contemporary instruments, music and clapping to worship? or are we bound to traditional hymns and quiet reverent worship. While both seem to exhibit manifestation of the Holy Spirit, which is better? It is a very tough question. If the Holy Spirit is working, then who of us can argue with what God has ordained? Both would appear to be correct, as was the case for the Jews and the Gentiles. Neither was more 'saved' than the other. Each of us must come to the realization that none of us is righteous not one, and that the only Right man died on a cross to save us from our deserved and rightful penalty of death for our wages of sin. Peter reminds the council of Jerusalem that a) God chose the Gentiles, b) God knows the heart and manifest the reality of His salvation through the Holy SPirit, and c) We must not test God. -------------------------------------------- RJ Carr -------------------------------------------- P&B expressed that one can be saved by listening to the Gospel and believing it. Salvation is guaranteed, for those who believe, through the grace of our Lord Jesus. The Jews felt that unless you were circumcised, you cannot be saved. I believe there is no hand me down religon. We must all weigh the options and come to a decision on our own. I happen to believe the story of Jesus. He is the son of God, who disabled death by dying on the cross for our sins and rising again. Peter's three facts: 1) God made a choice to let the Gentiles hear the Gospel. 2) God accepted the Gentiles by giving them the Holy Spirit. 3) It is through the Grace of Jesus that we are saved. Conclusion: All who are open to the word of God can be saved. -------------------------------------------- Blenda Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) P&B said that God accepted Gentiles by giving them the Holy Spirit, making no distinction between them and the Jews because He purified their hearts by faith. The Jewish teachers said, based on custom, you cannot be saved unless you are circumcised, and also they wanted Gentiles to obey the Law of Moses as well. I believe that circumcision is in the heart: Romans 2:29 "...circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God." 2) a) God called Paul to the Gentiles b) God gave Gentiles the Holy Spirit, making no distinction. c)The Jews were essentially testing God. In my opinion, no. Each one is different and will worship God in his own way; as long as Christ is glorified and given the honor He is worthy of, it is all from the Holy Spirit. Who are we to question new, perhaps radical ways of worship if God allows them? Glory to God alone. -------------------------------------------- James Chao -------------------------------------------- (a) The Jerusalem Council: The conflict over circumcision is a matter of outward ordinance vs. Inward cleansing. Why has it to be brought to Jerusalem for discussion? Because Jerusalem is the place where the concept was originated; not because Jerusalem is the HEAD QUARTER of church authority - The relationship between Christ and church is like head and body as Paul mentioned in Ephesians. There is no identification of upper body or lower body or head quarter and "field office" difference. (b) Focusing Point of Peter's Testimony on Accepting Gentiles as Brothers and Sisters: 15:9b -- PURIFYING THEIR HEARTS BY FAITH. Cross references: (i) Mark 7:1-23: ----- [23] "ALL THESE EVIL THINGS COME FROM WITHIN AND DEFILE A MAN." And (ii), I Peter 1:22 - 25: SINCE YOU HAVE PURIFED YOUR SOULS (mind, emotion and will) IN OBEYING THE TRUTH THROUGH THE sPIRIT IN SINCERE LOVE OF THE BRETHREN, LOVE ONE ANOTHER FERVENTLY WITH A PURE HEART. ----- (c)Why P&B had the deep concerns on this issue - Gentile Brothers and Sisters? Because so many miracles and wonders God had worked through them among the Gentiles, 15:12. ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (ACTS) CHAPTER 15:13-34 ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Directing Questions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1)Verses 14-21. Here James, the leader of the Jerusalem church, the Lord's brother, and probably President of the Council, sums up. What judgment does he give, and for what reasons? Do you think this would satisfy both Jew and Gentile? 2)Verses 22, 23. In what ways was the decision to be made known to the Gentiles, and with what results? From the whole debate what principles can you draw out to guide you when there is a disagree- ment among fellow-Christians (a) on essentials of the faith and (b) about non-essentials and matters of individual conscience? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments from (ACTS) Chapter 15:13-34 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------------------------------- RJ Carr -------------------------------------------- James enhanced Simon's talk by quoting the prophets and reiterating that God did not exclude anyone from hearing the gospel. Verse 19: "It is my judgement, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God." I believe the goal is to focus on what we have in common when bringing together races, religons etc. When the focus is on God rather than each other, good things start to happen. The church can provide direction and leadership through the pastor and the elders. It is good to have people in the church who can confront issues in a diplomatic way. A key to good communication is to first understand where the other party is coming from. -------------------------------------------- Les Tripp -------------------------------------------- Acts 15:15: While Peter, and Paul and Barnabas drew their conclusions from what they had seen and experienced, James sought confirmation from the Word. 20: James,' instead of directing the Gentiles to obey Judaic law, encouraged them to abstain from pagan worship practices. 22: Since P&B were from the church of Antioch, it was appropriate to send leader-representatives from the mother church (Jerusalem) to convey the decision of the leadership. 24: "...went out without our authorization..." The importance of the mission board -- from the earliest time. A body that was responsible for what was taught, or in this case, correcting what had been taught. 25: An endorsement of P&B's doctrine and ministry from the Jerusalem (mother) church or the mission board. Acts 15:29: Have you ever seen a doctrinal statement like this? Short, sweet, and to the point. 31: Encouraged by the fact that it was not a burdensome, legalistic position, confirming P&B's statement (Acts 15:10-11). 33: Are we to be a source of encouragement when we visit other believers? -------------------------------------------- Blenda Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) "It is my judgment..that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God..."I think it is wonderful for Gentiles, and Jews who are open-minded to do God's will. However, some will always be lost to stubborn tradition. This is just the way that they have not allowed God's Holy Spirit to affect their hearts. 2) The church sent P&B, Judas and Silas to Antioch with a letter telling the new believers to abstain from food sacrified to idols, from blood, meat of strangled animals and sexual immorality. It s interesting how these are all things relating directly to the physical body becoming impure. I think James said it best - "we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles...", and yet suggests certain guidelines. It would be discouraging to ask too much of the new believers, non-essential requests, but certain requirements are being made of them. It reminds me of a lot of life situations; we are required to do certain things as Christians, yet other things are individual choices which we are "allowed" to make. Praise God. -------------------------------------------- James Chao -------------------------------------------- Do What is Right, 15:29 I Corinthians 7:19 - cIRCUMCISION IS NOTHING, AND UNCIRCUMCISION IS NOTHING, BUT KEEPING THE COMMANDMENTS OF gOD IS WHAT MATTERS. Romans 2:25-29 - fOR CIRCUMCISION IS INDEED PROFITABLE IF YOU KEEP THE LAW; BUT IF YOU ARE A BREAKER OF THE LAW, YOUR CIRCUMCISION HAS BECOME UNCIRCUMCISION. -------- . Galatians 5:6 - fOR IN cHRIST jESUS NEITHER CIRCUMCISION NOR UNCIRCUMCISION AVAILS ANYTHING, BUT FAITH WORKING THROUGH LOVE. Galatians 6:15 - fOR IN cHRIST jESUS NEITHER CIRCUMCISION NOR UNCIRCUMCISION AVAILS ANYTHING, BUT A NEW CREATION. Acts 15: 29 - iT HAS BEEN DECIDED BY THE hOLY sPIRIT AND BY OURSELVES NOT TO SADDLE YOU WITH ANY BURDEN BEYOND THESE ESSENTIALS: ------. aVOID THESE, AND YOU WILL DO WHAT IS RIGHT. -------------------------------------------- Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) James concludes that Gentiles should be welcomed by the church and that they should look at the commonality in Christ, not the differences. 2) The church sent representative to declare the news to the body. This was probably done to avoid confusion and also to answer further any question or doubts that might arise. The result was "a blessing of peace" v 34. When matters of essentials of faith come up, we need to seek God's will, but remember the commonality of Christ. We need to work on resolution through prayer and study. We need to be open to the HS's leading and not close our minds to the Truth. ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (ACTS) CHAPTER 15:35-16:5 ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Directing Questions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1)What was the contention between Paul and Barnabas? List the developments which took place in this fourth period. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments from (ACTS) Chapter 15:35-16:5 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------------------------------- Les Tripp -------------------------------------------- 35: Building up the body. Perhaps that building up was related to disunity created by the preceding controversy. 36: The care and feeding of the newly planted churches. 38: When do we move to restoration with a brother in Christ? Paul obviously felt that John Mark was not ready to be a part of the team. Equally obvious, Barnabas did. 39: I hope we do not focus so intently in the sharp disagreement between P&B that we miss what happened to the missionary force. What could have been one missionary team consisting of two veteran missionaries and one missionary in training turned into two missionary teams, each led by a veteran missionary with a total of three missionaries-in-training. Here is an excellent example of equipping. 3: 1) Paul recognized that Timothy had God's anointing, he had potential and was willing to come along side of him to mentor and equip him. 2) Circumcision: (see v4) Why did Paul circumcize Timothy when the message he was preaching stated that circumcision was not essential to salvation? Is not Paul demonstrating "being all things to all people." Paul felt that it was essential for the effectiveness of the message among the Jews. Yet Paul refused to circumcise Titus (Gal 2:3) in response to those who considered it to be essential to salvation. Acts 16:5: Perhaps it is bit much to conclude that the results of Paul's missionary journey were related to his having circumcised Timothy. It does go with out arguing that the results were related to the message Paul preached. The results were the same as reported in v4 before Timothy joined the team. -------------------------------------------- James Chao -------------------------------------------- Division of Paul and Barnabas' Ministry over John Mark 13:36-41: Paul's name was Saul; he was great in flesh and turns out to be humble and small in Christ. Joses, a Levite of the country of Cyprus, and apostles called him Barnabas - Son of Encouragement, Acts 4:36. For the disagreement of taking Mark together on the second missionary trip, they separated their service. Then, Paul and Silas (from Jerusalem) were commended by the brethren to the grace of God going on to the second missionary journey. Barnabas took Mark to Cyprus, Barnabas' home country to continue his encouragement to Mark. Later on proofed that Mark was useful in God's ministry, II Tim. 4:11. >From that point on, Barnabas' name was not mentioned in the book of Acts. Paul made a reconciliation statement concerning Barnabas in I Corinthians 9:6 - IS IT ONLY bARNABAS AND i WHO HAVE NO RIGHT TO REFRAIN FROM WORKING? Yet it is a situation makes us wonder why it happened in such a strong church among the knowledgeable servants. Lord! point us to the right direction to serve you and to be useful in You. Amen. -------------------------------------------- Blenda Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) P wanted to go back to the towns they preached at; B wanted to take Mark along, but P thought it unwise since he was not a "faithful" partner. It is impossible to say who was right or wrong, but I personally can understand Paul's hesitation; however, perhaps Barnabas was willing to give people a chance which is a unique quality. It is very interesting question, and I think you can disagree with another Christian without a falling out. However, sometimes that is what will happen. It is not a good witness, in my opinion, to be "bull-headed" on Christian matters, unless it is obviously unBiblical. Certain men eat meat, others eat only vegetables, both are saved by God's grace. 2) God provided (timid!)Timothy. Their mission was to strengthen the new disciples and encourage their growth, by actually visiting them. We can help others grow strong by being involved intheir life. Very few take personal advice from a stranger, instead they listen to their true friends whom they know and trust. 3) Everything that took place was related to bringing more Gentile believers to Christ. -------------------------------------------- Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) P&B part ways here due to their disagreement on the usefulness of (John) Mark. In reading later in other books of the Bible, it appears that Barnabas was right. Mark goes on to become quite a leader in the church. Paul apparently still has respect for Barnabas too as seen in 1 Cor. 9:6. Mark later works with Peter 1 Peter 5:13, and comes to Paul later in life 2 Tim 4:11. I feel we should be able to disagree at times with our fellow brothers and sisters YET still remain respectful of them. 1 Peter 3:15 Gentleness and respect - I think this refers not only to non- christians, but even more so to our dealings with brothers/sisters in Christ. We need to treat all with gentleness and respect. 2) God provided Silas to join Paul when he and Barnabas parted ways. He also brought Timothy onto the scene here. Their primary work was to build up the churches they had established and ensure that the Lord's work was continued where it began. ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> (ACTS) CHAPTER 16:6-15 ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Directing Questions -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= A new period begins here, recording Paul's greatest missionary effort and achievement:the evangelization of three important Roman provinces Macedonia, Achaia, and Asia. 1)Verses 6-10. By what various means was Paul guided at this time? Trace on a map how remarkable the guidance was. What indication is there from this that God does not always guide us in the way we might expect? 2)Verses 11-15. The gospel comes to Europe. What evidence is there (a)that Luke, the author of Acts, joined Paul at this time; (b) that the work began in a small way (with verse 13, Cf.13:14-16;14:1,2 and Zc.4:10a), and (c) that Lydia was truly born again of the Holy Spirit? Do you ever try to organize great work for God, rather that let God start a lasting work in a small way? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Comments from (ACTS) Chapter 16:6-15 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -------------------------------------------- *Alvin Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) Paul was guided by the HS to go to Phrygia and Galatia and kept out of Asia, were kept out of Mysia and to Troas instead by the Spirit of Jesus, and were led by a vision to go to Macedonia. This is a remarkable trip in terms of sheer distance. It is a whirlwind tour of the Mediterranean's Eastern basin. See the maps referenced above for details of this trip, I will be posting maps on the Web page to show the missionary trips of Paul. This was the 2nd trip. This is definitely a sign that "the plan" or OUR plan does not come to pass, but God's plan is executed. Nonetheless, this does not excuse us not to prepare and make ourselves ready. 2) In this chapter, it appears that the author (Luke) joins the crew, this is evident from the WE descriptions used as pronouns rather than the 3rd person view. Lydia is introduced here to us as a woman of faith. Here we also see a small group meeting that is the start of major work for the Lord. Notice too that there is a place "where we expected to find a place of prayer". Our pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church preached this Sunday's message on prayer and asking in faith. Prayer always precedes God's working. We can only move mountains if we have faith to believe. From the book of James 5:13-16 [13] Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. [14] Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. [15] And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. [16] Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. Let us rejoice in praise, live righteously and pray powerfully with the faith that He will answer our prayers. -------------------------------------------- *Les Tripp -------------------------------------------- v8 - Paul and his team were sensitive to the leading of the HS. The HS gives direction for major and routine daily decisions. For example, the selection of Timothy to accompany them and deterrence from going into Bythinia. The Lord knows our hearts and the hearts of those with whom we come in contact. God is at work and expects us to join him in that work. God was working in Timothy but not in Bythinia. Kevin Walzak shared how the Mali prayer team sought the leading of the HS each day and at each stop on their journey. They know the leading of the HS when there was agreement among the members of the team! v9 - Paul's vision is evidence of a heart tuned to God. So tuned that he could hear God in his sleep. "I hope I pray as much during my sleep as I sleep during my prayers." v10 - There was agreement among the members of the team that going to Macedonia was in accordance with the leading of the HS. v10 - The first mention of Luke being on the team. There are now four men on the missions team: Paul, Silas, Timothy, and Luke. v13-14 - The Lord brought the team and Lydia together. They were operating under separate motivations to come to the river. The Lord brought them together for their mutual benefit: for the salvation of Lydia and her household and for the provision of the missions team. -------------------------------------------- *James Chao -------------------------------------------- Open You Heart to Heed and Open Your Mind to Understand: During P's second missionary trip to Europe, the first one recorded who received salvation was Lydia. Acts 16:14: nOW A CERTAIN WOMAN NAMED lYDIA HEARD US. sHE WAS A SELLER OF PURPLE FROM THE CITY OF tHYATIRA, WHO WORSHIPED gOD. tHE lORD OPENED HER HEART TO HEED THE THINGS SPOKEN BY p. Lydia is a person who (i) worship God; (ii) who has heart to serach for truth and (iii) who listened attentively to the preacher. Then, the Lord opened her heart to receive salvation. When Jesus appears to His disciples, He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Luke 24:45. The point is that if the Lord does not open our hearts, we would not be able to receive salvation. If the Lord has no mercy on me to open my understanding, I would be like Pharasees who have Scriptural knowledge but no understanding. I am only as a sounding brass. Knowledge puffs up and love builds up. Heavenly Father: Thank you for opened my heart to receive salvation. Lord, help me and open my mind to understand Scripture through this E-Study You are leading us. Amen. -------------------------------------------- *RJ Carr -------------------------------------------- God can open and close doors. I must be vigilant about where God wants me to go in my life. As with Paul, there will be areas that God puts up barriers, as well as, provides bridges. I believe most of my good decisions have been because I went against my natural tendency to take the easy way out. I believe that the way we handle the small things in life adds up to the great work God would like us to achieve. -------------------------------------------- *Blenda Chao -------------------------------------------- 1) Phyrgia and Galatia are southeast of the heart of the Mediterranean sea. Galatia is directly on the right border of Asia. Both Mysia and Troas are in Asia, but Macedonia is across the Aegean Sea. THis really took them full circle around and across several countries, but there are some specific places that the Spirit of Jesus would not let them go into. Amazing. From a human view, you would think you should win everyone for Christ, and do all the cities possible in a country, but Jesus said "NO". It touches me to think God is that detailed about all our travels. Certainly in my life God has led me in ways I never imagined possible - to my current school. It is also refreshing to see that Paul & Co. tried to go places too (were unsure and had to be told no by process of failing to be allowed in). It encourages me that spiritual "warriors" have to go the same route as I do! 2) (a)Evidence that Luke joined is that "we" is used, rather than "Paul & Co".(b) They did not go into a big public forum, i.e. the synagogue; rather, they went outside the city gate to the river, and even more so "insignificant", they spoke to women, which at that time women didn't even count, from what I understand, in certain censuses (feeding of 5000). (c) "The Lord opened her heart to respond..." To be honest, NO. I don't think I try to organize great works very often! Actually, I usually start very small! But, sometimes we place our expectations too high in our mind, even on small works. We must remember that it is the Lord Jesus who calls the unsaved to respond, not us.
